About #

Luohu is a district- the third level of administrative division in China- located in the southern part of Shenzhen municipality. The Shenzhen River, which separates the district from North District, Hong Kong forms its southern limits. The two characters in its name mean ‘to capture the lake’. Its area is small compared to other districts in the area but its population remains as large as European capital city!

Population: There are around 1 million people living here – that’s as many as there are in San Jose, California.

Scenery: Luohu is a bustling district in the heart of Shenzhen, one of China’s fastest-growing cities. Icy skyscrapers tower over a valley encircled by verdant hills and rivers. Lush, emerald mountains beckon in the distance, a welcome escape for those weary of the noise and fast-paced city life.

History: Originally inhabited by a mixture of tribal groups known to the Chinese as the Baiyue (“Hundred Yue”), Luohu and the rest of Guangdong province was always a frontier region. Gradually, it saw a steady trickle of Han migrants until the Tang dynasty, when there ceased to be a separation between the “Yue” and “Han”.

During the Qing dynasty, your ancestors were most probably affected by the Coastal Clearance ordered by the imperial government to provide a buffer zone against attacks from Ming adherents led by the pirate Koxinga, who had ousted the Dutch from the island of Taiwan and established a base there.

After the ban was lifted in 1684, many of the original inhabitants did not return, and immigrant Hakkas from other areas with limited arable land filled the vacuum… Other Hakkas were encouraged by Guangdong authorities to spread out and settle in mountainous areas in the Pearl River Delta.

Claim to Fame: Luohu is famous for the shopping and nightlife. Join the lively throngs on Dongmen pedestrian street for everything from clothes and shoes to street food! This district also hosts many of Shenzhen’s most recognizable buildings. Visitors flock to Diwang Tower, the tallest building in the city, for a breathtaking view from the sixty-ninth floor. Shun Hing Square, KK100, and the Guomao Building also pierce the Luohu skyline.

Food: Originally, Shenzhen was inhabited by various groups, which mainly included Cantonese and Hakka people. Today, it still remains a migrant city. Therefore its food is very diverse. It is famous for its dim sum and congee. Some of the local delicacies of Luohu include wine made out of lychees and peasant-style goose.

Where did the Overseas Chinese go: Since the 19th century, thousands of people have immigrated from Shenzhen in search of a better future. Their descendants can today be found in faraway tropical isles around the world, such as Jamaica and Tahiti, as well as many countries of Southeast Asia, and North America.
