About #

Huizhou is a prefecture-level city, which is the second-highest administrative division in China, located in Guangdong province. It forms the easternmost part of the Pearl River Delta megalopolis. It borders Shenzhen and Dongguan to the southwest and Guangzhou to the west.

Population: With 4.7 million people, Huizhou’s population is about the size of Melbourne’s.

Scenery: According to legend, an immortal from the north flying on a goose was so taken by the scenery at Huizhou’s West Lake that she landed and turned into Flying Goose Mountain. This is the origin of Huizhou’s nickname, “City of the Goose.”

Coming from the urban jungles of Shenzhen or Guangzhou, Huizhou’s understated, lush countryside and delicate architecture feel miles away from the manufacturing hubs of the Pearl River Delta. Within the last 40 years, the city has mushroomed from a sleepy backwater to one of the wealthiest cities in China. At the end of a long, humid day, couples and families can be seen enjoying the refreshing dusk breeze around its lakes, waterways, and verdant hills.

History: Huizhou, like much of the south, was relatively marginal for much of the history of Imperial China: considered a wild frontier region on the very edge of civilization, it was ideal for banishing disgraced officials! However, one such figure saw otherwise… An exiled poet from the Song court, Su Dongpo was absolutely awestruck by his new home. Over his three-year stint starting in 1094, Su wrote more than 500 verses dedicated to Huizhou and its people The town has repaid him this favor with a memorial hall dedicated to his memory and several bronzes of the artist relaxing in its gardens.

Claim to Fame: Interestingly, the city has become known, rightly or wrongly, as the place where South China’s powerful triad bosses meet and hang out! It is also the source of countless mainland and overseas Chinese celebrities, politicians, businessmen, and influencers past and present. The founder of Kuala Lumpur, Yap Ah Loy; Shanghai Knights actress Fann Wong; and the first Chinese woman to practice medicine in Hawai’i, Kong Tai Heong, all hail from Huizhou!
